UKs First Mobile Dentistry Service Kicks Off In Leicestershire

The UK's first ever nationwide mobile dentistry service has been launched to help improve access to NHS dental care .

The service from DentalXpress aims to increase provision of NHS dentistry in areas with a shortfall by using a fleet of multi-clinic, multi-room portable dental units, to offer patients a reliable, high quality dental care service.

The move comes as recent figures show just 58 per cent of the UK population were able to access an NHS dentist between March 2007 and March 2009.

Amarjit Gill, Non Executive Director and spokesperson for DentalXpress, said: "The DentalXpress Acute Access Programme has a mission to provide logistical support to Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) in areas where little or no access to NHS dentistry currently exists and commitment to a fixed practice in areas of greatest need is often impossible for a number of reasons."

NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland is the first PCT in the UK to introduce the mobile dental service .

The first DentalXpress practice will open in the Syston area of the county and aims to provide NHS dental care for 400 people each month.

A spokesperson for NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland PCT said: "We are delighted to be working with DentalXpress to bring NHS dental services to Syston in a new and innovative way. "

"We are confident that this surgery will be well received by patients wishing to access NHS dental services ."

Toby Cobb, managing director of DentalXpress, added: "We applaud NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland’s forward looking approach to providing additional dental services for those currently without access to an NHS dentist ."

DentalXpress said it is currently in discussions with six other PCTs to launch its Acute Access Programme in their local areas.
