NHS Dental Survey To Get Underway In South Devon

Thu, 21 Jan 2010

A new dental survey by the NHS is set to get underway today in South Devon, aimed at finding out how many people in the town of Torbay are searching for an NHS dentist .

More than 58 per cent of the town’s population currently has access to NHS dental care, but the Torbay Care Trust is looking to improve access by providing additional services in areas of greatest need.

The trust has teamed up with health watchdog group Torbay Local Involvement Network (LINk) to carry out the survey, which it hopes will provide accurate information to help it deliver the right services.

The research will try to discover whether local residents use an NHS dentist on a regular basis or only in emergencies, and also how many people pay to have private treatment carried out.

Roger Anderson, dental lead at Torbay Care Trust, said: "For some Torbay residents there is limited service available. We do have plans to improve this by providing additional NHS dental services in those areas."

"To inform our planning of these services we need information about how many people are looking for an NHS dentist .

Pat Harris, development officer for Torbay LINk, added: "This is an ideal opportunity for the LINk to find out what dentistry services residents need."
