Dentist Using DVDs To Tackle Patient Phobia

Tue, 16 Feb 2010

A Scottish dentist is helping patients overcome their anxiety by allowing them to watch DVDs as they undergo dental treatment .

Dr Elaine Halley and her team of dental professionals offer patients at the Cherrybank Dental Spa in Perth and at the newly-opened £1 million Cherrybank spa in Edinburgh the chance to watch shows and films through DVD glasses.

Dr Halley, the first female president of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, said: "A lot of people have real phobias of dentists – so much so that they will not even sit on the chair. Our philosophy is to ensure our patients are healthy, confident and smiling."

"The most popular DVD choices have been comedy programmes, but some people have watched full films," she added.

"The only problem I have had is an occasion where a patient was watching a Billy Connolly DVD – he really tried, but he couldn't stop laughing. It was good that he was so relaxed, but not ideal for his treatment ."

Patients at the Cherrybank Dental Spa, which specialises in general and cosmetic dentistry, are also treated to a full spa experience that includes hand and foot massages, paraffin hand waxes, and warm hand mittens and lavender neck pillows at no extra cost.

Both Cherrybank clinics in Perth and Edinburgh also offer the VELscope oral cancer screening system, which allows dentists to carry out a mucosal examination using fluorescence to detect mouth cancer in its earliest stages.
