Rise In Applications For Peninsula Dental School Exceeds Expectations

Mon, 14 Dec 2009

Applications for entry to the Peninsula Dental School in Devon have risen by 32 per cent on last year’s figures, the school has revealed.

The rise in applications for courses starting in 2010 means there are now more than seven applicants for each place, putting the school level with much longer-established dental centres that offer a four-year graduate entry course.

School Dean, Professor Liz Kay, said: 'We were delighted with the outstanding increase in applications last year and we were hopeful that we would see a healthy rise for 2010, but an increase of 32 per cent on last year is beyond expectation.

"My thanks go to my colleagues, who have constructed a first-class and innovative dental course and to our partners in the local NHS and local government who have provided us with vital support; and last but by no means least to our current students, who have embraced the objectives of our course and who are already building an excellent reputation for themselves in the field of dentistry ."

The Peninsula Dental School opened in 2006 and has since had a positive impact on NHS dental care in Devon, with its dental education facilities in Exeter and Plymouth providing treatment for patients as part of the dental curriculum.

The school will expand its services with the opening of a new dental education facility in Truro, Cornwall, next month, while a fourth facility is planned for Derriford, Plymouth, in spring 2011.

According to the school, once all four centres are up and running students will be able to provide treatment for up to 512 NHS patients each day, across Devon and Cornwall .
