Drinking home-brewed green tea can help protect teeth, new research suggests.
A study into the harm caused by different types of beverages on human teeth, published in the July/August issue of General Dentistry, revealed that home-brewed green tea offers more tooth protection than most other drinks including black tea .
For the research, Mohamed A. Bassiouny, DMD, BDS, MSc, PhD compared green and black tea with drinks high in both sugar and citric acid such as soda.
He found that tea does not have an erosive effect on a persons teeth unlike many beverages that contain high amounts of sugar and acids.
His also revealed that green tea is better than back tea due to its natural flavonoids and antioxidants.
But the study advised tea drinkers to refrain from using any additives such as milk, lemon or sugar and to avoid drinking pre-packaged iced teas that contain citric acid and high amounts of sugars.
